Many are familiar with Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey, the idea that every man from Moses to Hercules grows to adulthood, battling his alter-ego. This book explores the universal heroine's journey as she quests through world myth. Numerous stories from cultures as varied as Scotland and Africa reveal heroines who battle for safety and identity, thereby upsetting popular notions of the passive, gentle heroine. Only after she has defeated her dark side and reintegrated can the heroine become the bestower of wisdom, the protecting queen and arch-crone.

The Heroine's Journey is a woman's mythic quest to heal the deep wounding of her feminine nature on a personal, cultural, and spiritual level. She undertakes this spiritual and psychological journey to become whole, integrating all parts of her nature. Sometimes the journey is conscious, but in many cases it is not. This workbook is designed to guide the reader consciously through the different stages of the Heroine's Journey. Based on workshops conducted by the author with women of all ages, it can be used individually or in a group. The reader will explore each stage of the journey and look at the myths and fairy tales that shed light on these archetypal experiences: Separation from the Feminine, in which a woman searches for an identity in a masculine-defined culture. The Road of Trials, in which she challenges the myths of female inferiority, dependency, and romantic love. Spiritual Aridity, a feeling of having lost herself in her struggle for achievement. Initiation and Descent, a period of drawing inward and looking for the lost pieces of herself. Urgent yearning to reconnect with the Feminine and heal the Mother-Daughter Split. Integrating and healing the wounded parts of her inner Masculine. The Sacred Marriage, which occurs as she learns to integrate and balance all aspects of herself. The chapters include questions for reflection as well as exercises in guided imagery, writing, art, and dreamwork to bring clarity and understanding to the quest. Finally, the skills learned on this archetypal journey prepare a woman to work toward the larger quest of bringing consciousness to others and preserving the balance of life on earth.

Heroines have existed since the earliest prehistoric myths, questing to become the all-powerful mother goddess in an epic that has them descend to hell and pit themselves against tyrants and vicious matriarchs. Nonetheless, the nineties TV show Xena: Warrior Princess was one of the first to face this journey onscreen. In it, heroic Xena and her companion Gabrielle battle their dark sides over and over, growing into legends through their struggle. Xena and the Heroine's Journey explores the symbolism of the costumes, the talismans, the emotional struggles, the allegories of the musical episode. It lays out the journey step by step as Xena and Gabrielle face enemies that reflect their own submerged shadow sides, then plunge into true death through crucifixion and sacrifice. Along the way they battle their evil daughter-selves and thus reconcile with their dark sides, discovering the balance that makes a hero, whatever her gender.

This dissertation examines the evolution of the caizi-jiaren mode, and ideas about the self, gender, and ethics exhibited in it. My investigation will cover a broad range of texts spanning from the ninth century through the eighteenth century--from Tang chuanqi tales, through Ming-Qing drama, fiction, and tanci--aiming to show how the conventions of romance address cultural and ideological changes, and participate in broader social discourses. I argue that the heroine's quest for love and self is always part of a larger cultural project, fostered by a questioning and new awareness of the place of the individual within the social matrix. I read these romances in the light of the more dynamic modes of gender and desire, with a focus on the working of desire as a dialogue with moral systems and public power, and gender's relation to cultural expression.
